1760 - Durand, Winnebago, Illinois 1770 - Durand, Winnebago, Illinois In 1850, 15-year-old William E. Ripley lived with his parents, James and Mahala Ripley, and eight siblings in Laona Township in Winnebago County, IL. Another child, 8-year-old Marina Snow, also lived with the Ripleys. (A Ripley genealogy includes two older children who were out of the Ripley household by 1850, one of them a daughter, Lodema (b 1823) who died 4 Sep 1841, approximately the time young Marina had been born. Marina Snow could possibly have been a motherless Ripley grandchild. ) William Ripley married Emily Butterfield in 1859 in Winnebago County, Illinois. They lived in Illinois until at least 1870, when their son William was born. By about 1874, when their son Edward was born, they had moved to Iowa. In 1880, William and Emily lived in Deerfield Township in Chickasaw County, Iowa. Emily's maternal uncle, Oliver Phipps, and his family moved to Iowa between 1877 and 1879 and also appeared in the 1880 census for Deerfield Township. William and Emily appear to have lived in Chickasaw County, IA, until at least 1882, when their last child, Cora was born. When William's sister Eliza S. Boyd died in February of 1904, her newspaper obituary said that three of her brothers survived her: E.D. and ___ Ripley of Rockford, Illinois, and Charles Ripley of Durand, Illinois. William appears to have died before September of 1904, as on 28 Sep 1904, his widow, Emily Ripley, received title to a 40-acre federal homestead in Section 24 of Straight River Township (T139N R35W) in Hubbard County, Minnesota. |
