HIST: HIST: ' 'The Sanford Herald' ', 17 Apr 1979 HIST: HIST: Sanford and Lee County have had their share oftalented individuals. Certainly at the top of the list in recent years was Frank Joyce, Jr. of Monroe, a former Sanford resident, and well known floral designor whose untimely death from aheart attack last week shocked his manyy friends in Sanford. HIST: Joyce left Sanford a number of years ago to accept a position as Director of Marketing and Research for Hanford Wholesale Florists of Salisbury & Charlotte. At the time of his death he had 15 designers whom he was teaching. Not everyindividual talented in this creative field is a good teacher. Those fortunate enough to studied with him, report that he was the exceptionto the rule, a creative person who was marvelously patient, understanding andwilling to show others thesecrets of the trade. He studied design first with Tommie Bright in Chicago and it was she , who first predicted he would be a great designer. HIST: Everywhere Joyce went, he was attuned to beauty - a twig, arock, a flower, anything of God's making. He was ever alert to talent whereverhe found it. He quickly spotted a very elderly man he noticed doing some exceptional wood carvings in olive wood. He promptly engaged him to carve Nativity scenes for thefirm he worked, certain he had found, as it was proven later one of the best craftsmen in the area, relying only upon his owbn instincts. HIST: Joyce was ever eager to share his knowledge with those in the industry, interested in improving and upgrading the field. Only a few weeks before his death he had lectured to the American Institute of Floral Designers inLouisville, KY, andhad been on the program for the NC Florists Association onlythe week before his death. No request was too small, to share his interest and concern. It was the same in retail field where the small order had the sameattention of the large. HIST: When Joyce's funeral was conducted from the First Presbyterian Church of Sanford, floral designors from as far away as Ft. Worth, TX, many throughout the south came to express sorrow and concern. Sanford people were not surprised severalyears ago to learn theat when Hanford's onlu daughter Elizabeth Hanford was married to Sen. Robert Dole, Joyce was chosen to do the wedding flowers.
