Clifford Anthony Curtis was born in Waltham, Mass. His family moved to Vermont when he was one year old, to Albany, New York at age 7 and to Baltimore, Maryland at age ten. Clifford was graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute For Boys in 1928. That year he started working for Curtis Publishing Company in Boston. In 1929 he got a job with the B & O Railroad as the Chairman of the Survey Department. He claimed that it was the best job that he ever had. In 1930, due to the "Great Depression", he was furloughed and moved in with his parents in Wilmington, Delaware. They had moved to Wilmington the prior year. In 1931, Clifford started working as a Posting Clerk with the Indiana Trust Company. During the year, through the leaders at North Baptist church, he felt a call to the ministry. He started at Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Ill. in 1932. About 1937, Clifford was introduced to Catherine Keeler, from Philadelphia. Leon and Virginia were mutual friends with Frank and Florence Keeler and Ernest and Ina Curtis. They introduced the couple. On March 5, 1938 they was married. One year later, on March 5, 1939, they were blessed with a daughter, Martha Joy. Clifford pastored churches in New England, one of which was an historical church in Amesbury, Mass. The parsonage had been built in the 1700s. 1946-1947 was spent on the mission field of "French West Africa". My wife Sandy was born in Wilmington, Delaware on February 4, 1946. Her Uncle Ed Keeler drove her mother to the hospital from Philadelphia. Catherine and Sandy joined Clifford and Joy in Africa soon after Sandy's birth. During that year, the entire family got malaria except Sandy and came home because of it. Clifford was able to book passage on an old freighter. During the trip, the ship was caught in a severe storm and the captain made port in Bermuda. That was a good decision since another ship in the vicinity sank. After the family's arrival in the United States, they discovered that their trunks were empty. Someone had broken into them and stole all their belongings. The only thing the family had were the few belongings in their cabin and $40. That year, Clifford received a call to a Baptist church in Maine and they accepted it and began a new life. On April 3, 1948 their son, John Timothy was born in a hospital over the border in Edmundston, N.B., Canada. The family moved to Wilmington Delaware about 1949 or 1950 and Clifford obtained employment at the Dupont Co. He had worked there during graduate school years ago and they counted it toward his seniority. Catherine's mother died during that time and left her $1,000 of which she used to put a down payment on a new ranch house. The family who had nothing just a few years earlier now had a home and some security. God does give back. Sandy writes - Dad was a great father and enjoyed watching his children grow up over the years. He encouraged involvement in youth groups at church, and even helped Mom put on Sunday afternoon lunches for the church teens in our home - so that Joy could make new Christian friends. He enjoyed watching his daughter Sandy and son John be part of the group from a young church as they helped build a new church building. Then, later, Dad was happy to see his grandchildren being taught Christian values for life. One gift he especially had was studying, and he always appreciated being asked to prepare a sermon or Sunday School lesson. He loved to read, the Bible being his favorite book. Dad spent a long, lonely year in Daytona Beach, Florida after Mom passed away. He was invited to make his home with Ron and Joy in Ohio, where he enjoyed being until his health went downhill and he needed nursing care. He got good care at a nearby nursing home, being looked after and checked up on by his loving daughter, Joy, who lived nearby. Dad was truly looking forward to Heaven, to see the Lord and Mom, and as his kids, we were thankful he didn't have to suffer long. Now he is finally "at home"! |
