Frank KOEPP was born in Klein Silber (Little Silver), Pyritz near Reetz, a larger village (township). At the time he was born these towns were in West Prussia, in the county of Arnswalde. After World War II, this region is now in Poland and the towns names have been changed. Klein Silber has become Suliborek and Reetz has become Recz. Klein Silber had 129 households with 499 inhabitants. The town of Reetz had 1149 households and 3648 inhabitants. Franz' father was a farm worker in Klein Silber, Prussia, Province of Neumark. Franz had four sisters: Frederike Wilhelmine born 4 Sept 1855; Auguste Emelie born 28 Oct 1857; Auguste Albertine born 5 Jan 1862 and Emilie Albertium born 22 Sept 1865. All the children were born in Klein Silber. Auguste Emelie died 9 July 1858. Franz had a stepbrother, Karl Gustav born 6 May 1868 and a stepsister, Emilie Franziske born 14 Dec 1871 in Klein Silber. Franz' mother died in childbirth in 1855 and his father remarried a Frederike Luise ZIEGENHAGEN. Frank KOEPP immigrated to America in 1883. He sailed on the ship Hohenzollern, and arrived in America 18 April 1883. Koepp is a variation of Kopp which may relate to the Kopplin's as that is also a variation of Kopp. There are records of Koep's that married Kopplins, relationship to this family not known, Koepplin's and Kopplins are found near Arnswald. In Germany the name was spelled KÖPP or KÖPPE and is of locative origin deriving from the name of a signboard used to indicate a person's dwelling place or business premises. It is a modern variant of the Old Germanic surname Kopp which was a regional term for a 'raven'. |
