1850 - Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois w/Dexter A. Knowlton , works as clerk to Rockford in 1853 1860 - Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois, bookkeeper 1870- Rockford Ward 4, Winnebago, Illinois 1880 - Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois Past and present of the city of Rockford and Winnebago County, Illinois - 1905; p 77 William A Knowlton was a native of Chautauqua, New York, and removed west as a young man. He came to Rockford in 1853 from Freeport Illinois. After the death of J.A. Manny, Mr. Knowlton became a business agent for Mrs. Manny. He retained this position for many years, and was eminently successful. Mr. Knowlton was subsequently engaged in many manufacturing enterprises. He sustained financial reserves, and in the autumn of 1891 he removed to Chicago Illinois, where he died September the 17th the following year. p. 211 Another member of the Knowlton family who figured prominently in business circles for many years was William Alfred Knowlton, who died in Rockford [see note] in 1892. His history forms an integral chapter in the records of this city. He married Matilda Hitchcock and they became children of six children - William A Jr.; Evaline, Helen, who is the wife of Charles E Gibson, of Boston Massachusetts; David who died in childhood; Matilda, who is the wife of T.H. Hardy [should be John S Hardy], of Boston, Massachusetts; and Mary T. Note: p. 211 says he died in Rockford while page 77 says Chicago. His death cert. #00009524 shows he died in Chicago, Cook County on 09/17/1892 marriage KNOWLTON, WILLIAM A - HITCHCOCK, MATILDA 01/21/1857 I/ WINNEBAGO |
