For a plain text copy, please email me. 1820 - Halfmoon,Saratoga,NY 1830 - Ellery, Chautauqua, New York abt 1837 to the Wisconsin Territories. Travel to the land office was a very long journey. Most waited a few years, then traveled in groups. The first grant for what became Janesville was on 8/10/1837 by the Holmes brothers who came here in the fall of 1835. At the same time Johnn Inman also filed his claim for what is now Afton plus land for what he thought would become Wisconsin City. That land is now in or near Janesville's Rockport Park. 1 Jun 1840 - Rock, Wisconsin Territory 1 son under 10 2 sons 2- to 30 WI 1842 State Census Index - typo, reads Jamesville rather than Janesville. Janesville was formed in 1840 and named for Henry Janes. 3/3/1843 - land grant in what was then Centertown, west of the Rock River 2/1/1848 - land grant east side of river 1850 - Janesville (East Side of Rock River), Rock, Wisconsin 1860 - Middleton, Dane, Wisconsin 1895 - Superior, Douglas, Wisconsin -- see notes for son John B. and Ehpriam - at this time, township 3-N was Centertown, not Janesville, this area became part of the Janesville Township and later what is now the city of Janesville.
