Freeport Journal Standard Clara Mae “Sis” Zimmerman, 86, of Monroe, Wis., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at Monroe Clinic and Hospital due to complications of diabetes. She was born on Aug. 4, 1922, the daughter of August F. and Mathilda (Hellwig) Gutzmer in rural Warren. Clara was married to Morlin L. “Morey” Zimmerman by Rev. Showalter on Dec. 30, 1961, at Peace Church in Browntown, Wis. She was confirmed and married at Peace Church. Clara was employed at Pilgrim and Country Kitchens, Oaktron Industries and Swiss Colony. She was a member of McConnell American Legion Post 1225 Auxiliary and Illinois Rural Mail Carriers Association Auxiliary. Clara loved to cook and bake, especially for others, having had to learn when her mother passed when she was just 17 years old. She was famous for her Zimmerman pickles recipe, loved to camp and do lottery crosswords. She always said it helped to sharpen her mind as she laid in the hospital bed in nursing homes and at home. She loved Casino trips. She looked forward every year to the annual Gutzmer reunion, but most of all she loved her family and her pets over the years. Clara was a patient of Dr. James Stormont for 50 years, and under his tender, loving medical care, she survived many illnesses. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Morlin “Morey” and daughter, Lisa; her much beloved four cats; and godchildren, Mary Andreas and Kevin Krupke. She was preceded in death by her father in August 1962; mother, Mathilda in 1939; and brother, Raymond in 1953. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Drive, Monroe, with Pastor Tim DeVries and Pastor David Mann co-officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at the funeral home. A memorial fund is being established. |
