middle name WWI draft reg. Standard History of Waupaca County, Wisconsin Edited by John M. Ware 1917 Gustav A. Koplien Though he is still young, Gustav A. Koplien has shown the spirit and enterprise of the capable citizen and is the type of man whose success is honestly won and who is a credit to any community. He is one of the progressive younger farmers whose homes are in Lind Township. Mr. Koplien was born in the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, April 5, 1879, a son of Julius and Minnie (Tide) Koplien. His parents were both natives of Germany, his father born in 1842 and his mother in 1846. In 1873, after their marriage, they emigrated to America and settled in Milwaukee. That city was their home for seventeen years, at the end of which time they moved to Lind Township. Julius Koplien bought 120 acres of land and spent his years profitably and usefully in cultivating it until 1904. when he went out to the State of Oregon, where his death occurred June 3, 1905. His widow returned to Wisconsin and is now living in Wolf River Township of Winnebago County. They brought twelve children into the world, and seven of them are still living, namely: Herman, August, Fred, Gustav A., Julius H., Lizzie and Emma. Before the family left Milwaukee Gustav A. Koplien had received his first instruction in the public schools, and he also attended some of the public schools of Waupaca County. Growing up on a farm, he took to farming as his permanent vocation, and since his marriage has lived on and now owns 136 acres of the old homestead originally settled by Mrs. Koplien's parents. Mr. Koplien has carried on the work of farming with keen intelligence and adapting himself constantly to the conditions of modern progress and is making profits as a general farmer and stock raiser. In politics he is a republican. On September 22, 1904, he married Miss Esther Glaisner. She was born on the farm where she still resides, on November 9, 1886. Her birthplace was a log cabin, then the home of her parents, Gottfried and Augusta (Gollnick) Glaisner. Her parents were both natives of Germany, her father born in 1851 and her mother in 1856. He came to America at the age of eighteen, first locating at Watertown in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. His wife was seventeen when, she came across the ocean, and her first home was in Bloomfield Township, of Waushara County. They were married at Berlin, Wisconsin, in 1878, and soon afterward settled on the farm now owned by Mr. Koplien. Of that land only seven acres were cleared, and Mr. Glaisner was largely responsible for the improvement and development of the place, and before he retired he found himself surrounded with the comforts and the evidences of material prosperity. He and his wife still reside on the homestead. Their children were: Arthur, Lydia, (deceased), Clara and Esther. Mr. and Mrs. Koplien have one son, Alvin Gustav Arthur, who was born October 31, 1909. |
